If something looks wrong inside the app, open Settings → About → Diagnostics, tap Share and attach what it gives you. It contains timings and error codes only: no photograph, no filename, no text read from your screenshots, and no location.
Common questions
Where do my photos go?
Nowhere. Rollshelf reads the photos the operating system gives it access to, works everything out on the device, and stores what it learns in its own database on that device. It sends anonymous usage counts and crash reports — never a photo — which Settings → Photos & privacy → Share anonymous usage turns off. Only if you invite friends or join a friend's invite does it use our one server, the invite service, and that never receives a photo either (privacy policy, §5.7). A photo leaves your phone only when you share or save it somewhere yourself.
Why does it want access to all my photos?
Because the shelves are built from the whole roll, not just the Screenshots album — an ID card, a whiteboard or a trip is a photograph, not a screenshot. You can grant access to a selection instead; the app works, with less to work from, and says so.
It is taking a long time to go through my library.
The first pass reads every photo once, and on a large library that is hours rather than minutes. It runs while the app is open, and goes faster while the phone is charging. Each time you open Rollshelf it does more; it only does this once per photo.
Something is on the wrong shelf.
Tell it. Corrections are how it learns, and the app never uploads them, or anything else it reads. If a whole category is consistently wrong, please email — that is the most useful thing you can send.
"Clear" and "Delete" are different.
Clear takes something off the app's shelves and leaves it in Photos. Delete removes it from your phone, through the system's own confirmation, and it goes to Recently Deleted (iPhone) or the Trash (Android 11 and newer), where you have 30 days to change your mind. Android 10 has no bin: there a delete is for good, and the system asks for each file.
What are the Vault and Documents?
The Vault (Pro; your first 25 items are free, then 20 more by watching up to two short ads, 10 items each) moves photos and videos you pick out of your library and into the app, where other apps cannot see them, and opens with your phone's own lock. Putting them back is always free.
Documents are photos that look like identity papers. They stay in your library, the app shows them behind your phone's lock, and their numbers are masked to the last few characters before anything is written down.
What happens to my packs if I delete Rollshelf?
Nothing: a pack is a zip file saved to the folder you chose — "Rollshelf Packs (do not delete)", on your phone, in iCloud Drive or wherever you picked — and deleting the app does not touch it. Any zip tool opens it. Deleting that folder or its files deletes the photos in them, and we can't recover them; the "(do not delete)" in the names is there to warn you. Only a pack not saved yet lives inside the app, and nothing has left your library for it: deleting the app deletes it. On iPhone, Offload App (Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Rollshelf) keeps it; on Android, keep the app's data when the uninstall dialog asks, and your packs are listed again when you reinstall. Removed originals stay in Recently Deleted (iPhone) or the Trash (Android 11 and newer) for 30 days (Android 10 has no bin), and unpacking puts a pack's photos back in your library.
What happens to my Vault items if I delete the app?
They are deleted with it: they live in the app's own storage. Put them back first. On iPhone, offloading the app keeps them and your iPhone backup includes them; on Android, the uninstall dialog may offer to keep the app's data.
Does it need the internet?
No. On the free plan the ads need a connection, and inviting friends or joining a friend's invite needs one too. On iPhone, a photo or video whose original is stored in iCloud downloads when you open it. Nothing else does: everything the app knows about your photos it worked out offline. Anonymous usage counts and crash reports go when there is a connection and wait when there is not.
How do I turn off photo locations?
Settings → Photos & privacy → Keep photo locations. Turning it off does not just stop the app reading them — it erases every coordinate the app has already stored.
An ad looked wrong.
Use Settings → Ads → Report an ad, or email us. Pro removes the ads.
Pro, billing and refunds
Cancel or manage the yearly plan in your store's subscription settings — the app's Settings → Manage subscription opens them. On iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions. On Android: Google Play → your profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal; Pro stays until the end of the paid year.
Restore a purchase after a reinstall or on a new phone from the Pro sheet or Settings → Restore purchases.
Purchases are handled entirely by Apple or Google. Refunds go through reportaproblem.apple.com (Apple) or Google Play; the app cannot issue one and has no record of your payment.
